Conor McGregor News: New Jersey Native Frankie Edgar Wants Title Fight With McGregor At Madison Square Garden After UFC 200

Former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is still pushing for his own fight against featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

"The Answer" was promised a shot at the world 145-pound title after he defeated two-time title contender Chad Mendes last December at the Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. Edgar stopped Mendes in the first round, via knockout.

McGregor, however, prevented the match from happening when he instead opted to fight for Rafael Dos Anjos' lightweight title scheduled for UFC 196 last March 5th. But when Dos Anjos pulled out due to a broken foot, "The Notorious" instead faced former lightweight title contender Nate Diaz in a non-title welterweight bout.

The Irishman ended up losing the fight, and is now slated to face Diaz in a rematch with the same stipulations at UFC 200 in July 9th.

Edgar himself will be part of UFC 200, as he fights former long-time featherweight champion José Aldo for the interim title, as the night's co-main event feature. But as far as he's concerned, Edgar is already looking ahead into potentially getting his much-awaited crack at McGregor.

Speaking to FOX Business, Edgar is targeting to be back in action against McGregor at UFC 205, the company's debut event in New York, slated for November 12th.

"I'd love to get a win here in July and then fight McGregor for that real title in the Garden in November. If not McGregor, then I'll be defending my title in the Garden," said the Toms River, New Jersey native.

As for his rematch against Aldo, Edgar believes "momentum is on his side" this time around. The first time both men faced each other was during Edgar's featherweight debut in 2013. Coming into that fight, he was fresh off two title fight losses against former lightweight champion Benson Henderson.

"Three years went by," Edgar said. "I'm much more experienced, I'm much more mature as a fighter, and I'm much more comfortable in there."

UFC 200 will be taking place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
