For the uninitiated, "XCOM 2," which was developed by Firaxis Games and released last year in February, is the sequel to the critically acclaimed 2012 game "XCOM: Enemy Unknown," which won awards, such as the VGX Award for Best PC Game and BAFTA Games Award for Strategy.

Basically, what players have to do is to take the role of the commander of a military organization that fights extraterrestrial enemies by moving their teams and then shooting these at the right time. Players can also upgrade their characters and bases, as well as research new technologies.

Its successor, "XCOM 2: War of the Chosen," is described to expand the original strategy game's mechanics, but has added a new twist. The storyline also takes place about two decades after the events of "XCOM: Enemy Unknown."

The good news is that, according to VideoGamer, for those who will be trying out the free version of the game this weekend, all of their in-game progress and achievements will be transferred over to the full game should they wish to purchase the "XCOM 2" or "XCOM 2 Digital Deluxe" at the special discounted price.

"XCOM 2: War of the Chosen" is available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, and Linux.
