Church-Led Literacy Project Expected to Benefit 10,000 Angolans
Over the next three years, 10,000 Angolan men and women are expected to benefit from a literacy-for-social change program supported by Church World Service and the Council of Christian Churches in Angola
Over the next three years, 10,000 Angolan men and women are expected to benefit from a literacy-for-social change program which also integrates economic self-sufficiency into the curriculum.
The Angolan literacy project, the product of a partnership between Church World Service (CWS) and the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA), draws on the methodology of ProLiteracy – a nonprofit international literacy organization based in Syracuse, NY.
CWS Associate Director of Social and Economic Development Tammi Mott says ProLiteracy’s approach provides training, technical assistance and local grants that enable indigenous people to conduct the programs in their own communities programs that integrate literacy education with economic self-reliance, health, education, peace, human rights and environmental sustainability projects.
"Those issues are areas of focus for Church World Service programs worldwide, so the Angola’s needs and ProLiteracy’s approach are a perfect fit," says Mott.
According to CWS, the Angola literacy project is ProLiteracy’s first project in that country and the first translation of their social change manuals into the Portuguese language. The project is also part of CWS’s broad, multi-year Africa Initiative and highlights an expansion of the international agency’s current programs in Angola.
