'Fallout 4' E3 2015 News, Details: Game Director Reveals Immortal Companions, Calls Boston the Perfect Place for Sequel
This year's post-apocalyptic role-playing game offering from Bethesda Game Studios, "Fallout 4," has some new changes that players would definitely love. Meanwhile, the game's choice of location was explained.
A report from IGN said that the German Shepherd or any of the companions which players will get to travel with in their quests will not die. Confirming the news is none other than game director Todd Howard, who believes that having the NPCs immortal would likely improve the player's gaming experience.
"[The dog] does not die, because we realize that's automatic re-load," Howard told IGN. "We like to make the game where the only scenario where you re-load is your own death. So, like a lot of open world games, they'll have it where 'you failed this mission, go ahead and press 'A' to redo it.' We don't ever want to do that. So, we've got to handle all failstates and some of those we have to do like, 'Okay, the dog can't die, because you're just going to re-load.'"
Howard clarified that it's up to the player to choose their companions. It could be an animal pet or another character "which we haven't shown yet." They can, of course, travel the whole of Boston with no companion at all.
Speaking of Boston, Howard admits that the development team had "debated for a while" regarding the choice of location. They ended up picking the Beantown due to its mix of history and technology which perfectly fits the theme for the upcoming title.
"We had had some seeds in Fallout 3. And we felt that Boston has the right mix of American history and high-tech," Howard said. "It's very good for Fallout."
Lead designer Emil Pagliarulo, a Boston-native, also chimed in:
"There's a richness and a flavor to the city."
"Fallout 4" is slated to launch for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC this November.
