'The Good Wife' Season 7 News: Finale's Slap Discussed in Detail by Creators
On Sunday, "The Good Wife" left television viewers highly emotional as the hit series aired its last episode. Husband-and-wife creators Robert and Michelle King recently talked about the slap that started and ended the drama.
In a video posted by CBS, Robert explained that the idea of closing the dramatic scenes with a slap was derived from the pilot episode wherein Alicia (Julianna Marguiles) slapped her philandering husband Peter (Chris Noth). "We started with this feeling that it should begin with a slap and end with a slap," he said.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Robert was referring to that time before Alicia decided to follow a career path that made her one of the most respectable attorneys in town. As their twisted story began, Peter admitted that he was having extramarital affairs. A furious and disheartened Alicia landed her palm on Peter's face, marking the beginning of her travails.

In the final episode of the seventh season, Alicia got a taste of her own medicine as long-time friend Diane (Christine Baranski) delivered a stinging slap to the protagonist's face. Robert further explained that the ending was similar to the premiere episode as the slaps on both episodes were meant to be a wake-up call for Alicia.
Fans who saw the finale would understand that Diane was trying to make Alicia understand what type of person she had become. Though she might not have realized that she was developing more of the characteristics she hated in Peter, Diane's hand on her cheek should have done the job. "We had talked about that the victim becomes the victimizer, and that's really the circle that we see of Alicia," Michelle said.
According to The New York Times, another issue raised during the discussion was the possibility for Alicia to have her own fairy-tale ending. While they considered allowing Jason (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to take Alicia away from the mess she was in, production decided it won't do well for the storyline.
For Robert and Michelle, a happy ending for Alicia "seemed to be off-topic" since the series was supposed to give viewers a closer look at how one woman delves into power and how that power changes her entirely.
"The Good Wife" aired for seven years, from 2009 to 2016 on CBS.
