'Twin Peaks' Revival: Most New Cast Members Might Only Be Playing Cameo Roles

It may have been more than 25 years since ABC's "Twin Peaks" was canceled after a second season, but fans of the cult classic will finally get a third season of the show when it comes back to the small screen by May on Showtime Network.

When it first came out in 1990, "Twin Peaks," created by Mike Frost and David Lynch, followed a murder investigation and the hunt for a supposed serial killer who might have been living in Twin Peaks. The primary victim of the killer, homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), was found dead and naked at the bank of the river near the community, and a subsequent investigation revealed that the girl was actually leading a double life.

One thing led to another in the investigation - each bringing mysteries of their own and involving other people from the community.

"Twin Peaks is a mystery that holds other mysteries," creator Lynch said when asked to describe his series in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Showtime's revival of the show is a limited series event which will consist of only 18 episodes, but many actors from the 1990 "Twin Peaks" series will come back to reprise their roles, including Lee who plays Laura, and Kyle MacLachlan who plays FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, the one leading the murder investigations.

The new "Twin Peaks" has a total of 217 cast members, and it is a mix of returning actors and new ones. Notable newcomers include Naomi Watts (Shut In), Monica Bellucci (Spectre), Michael Cera (Juno), and Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder among others.

Lynch is not giving any details as to what roles most of the new cast members will play, but returning actor MacLachlan hinted to EW that most of them will only be playing cameo roles, saying that he heard that many of the actors wanted to be part of the revival because they were a huge fan of it, and that some of them was just "about working with David [Lynch] because he is so phenomenal."

In addition, Showtime CEO David Nevins shared that the events of the show will not only revolve around Twin Peaks, but "it takes place all over the country."

The show premieres May 21, 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime.
