2. What visas do they apply to?
The visa freeze applies to immigrant visas from the affected countries effective Jan. 21. Nationals from the countries included in the freeze may continue to participate in interviews and appointments as part of the application process but the State Department will not be issuing any visas from the countries until it completes a “full review of all policies, regulations, and guidance to ensure that immigrants from these high-risk countries do not utilize welfare in the United States or become a public charge.”
The visa freeze does not apply to tourist visas and other non-immigrant visas, nor will it impact dual citizens of affected countries who also hold citizenship in a country not included on the list, as long as the countries are not included as part of more extensive visa freezes.
The State Department clarified that “No immigrant visas have been revoked as part of this guidance,” meaning that nationals from the affected countries currently in the U.S. on valid visas can remain here.
