Top conservative rebukes of Trump for 'grotesque' Rob Reiner death post: 'Completely inappropriate'

Reps. Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene

Both Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., condemned his post.

"Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered. I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they're afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it," said Massie.

Massie, whom Trump endorsed in 2022, has drawn Trump's ire during his second term amid Massie's criticism of policies such as the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" and U.S. military intervention in Iran.

Greene suggested Trump's comments were tone-deaf not only toward the Reiners but toward all Americans whose families have been ravaged by drug addiction and mental illness.

"Rob Reiner and his wife were tragically killed at the hands of their own son, who reportedly had drug addiction and other issues, and their remaining children are left in serious mourning and heartbreak," Greene said.

"This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It's incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy, especially when it ends in murder," she added.

Greene, who was one of Trump's staunchest allies even as he faced his second impeachment in 2021 and was slapped with 34 felony charges in New York in 2023, announced her imminent resignation from Congress last month after Trump attacked her when she and Massie helped lead the charge in pushing Congress to force the release of the Epstein files.

Greene struck a tone of disillusionment in her resignation statement, citing the president's recent attacks on her and his potential support for a primary challenger as key reasons for her decision.
